Christmas came a little early for Los Angeles and Mayor Eric Garcetti.

The state of California has granted the city $64.6 million to build 553 affordable housing units, Garcetti announced Wednesday.

The funding will go toward six projects, including the Jordan Downs public housing project in Watts, the L.A. Times reported. Of the 553 units, 350 are designated to house the homeless while the rest will have below-market rents.

The projects will be centered around transit, as the funding comes from the greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program under the state’s Air Resources Board. Overall, $290 million was awarded to 25 projects across the state, and L.A.’s $65 million package was the biggest piece of the pie. [LAT]Cathaleen Chen
