Well, that was easy.

The Planning and Land Use Management Committee approved the proposed Frank Gehry project in West Hollywood after developer Townscape Partners agreed to scale back its size.

The new changes include a 50-foot reduction in the height of the tallest building — it went from 234 feet, or 15 stories, to just 178 feet — and a decrease in the number of units, from 249 to 229. Townscape will also pay $2 million to the city to improve a traffic island adjacent to the project.

The developer’s swift decision to adjust its plans came amid intense opposition from district residents, including Council member David Ryu, who said in a letter he would not vote in favor of the project unless it was downsized.

Next week, the mixed-use proposal for 8150 Sunset Boulevard will go before the City Council, which has the final say. [Patch]Cathaleen Chen
