The city’s planning commission approved Italian developer Est4te Four’s proposal to add five stories to the existing two-story Challenge Cream and Butter Co. building in the Arts District.

The project, designed by wHY architecture, calls for a restaurant, retail, artist studios, a private club and an automated parking garage.

The additional stories would add about 64,000 square feet of space to the project, Curbed reported.

Est4te acquired the 1920s-era, 44,547-square-foot structure for $21.6 million last year. It will be one of the first Arts District buildings legally converted to housing under the Artist-in-Residence ordinance.

The project, at 929 E. 2nd Street, is one in a spate of similar developments underway in the neighborhood, including Legendary Development and Fairfield Residential’s seven-building residential complex near Third Street and Santa Fe Avenue. [Curbed]Subrina Hudson
