Playa del Rey road reconfigurations (11th District)

A plan to eliminate car lanes on four Playa del Rey streets to make them safer for cyclists is coming up against stiff opposition.

A petition against the plan has already garnered 2,300 signatures from locals, including from tech entrepreneur Peter Pham. They say that a similar plan already completed on Vista del Mar is dramatically adding to their commute times.

Resident Susanne Madden, who started the petition, directed it at City Council Member Mike Bonin, asking him to stop the “one-lane madness.”

“The idea that you can legislate recklessness and stupidity by making everyone drive at a snail’s pace is crazy,” she told L.A. Weekly.

A spokesperson for Bonin told the paper that the council member is speaking with leaders in the tech community as well as local residents to gather input as the project moves forward.

The plan calls for the reduction of Pershing Drive, Jefferson Boulevard and Culver Boulevard to one lane apiece. [LAW]Subrina Hudson
